SHEPHERDSTOWN — Middle-schoolers gathered outside of Shepherdstown Middle School on Tuesday afternoon to honor victims of drunken driving.

Members of Shepherdstown Middle School’s A.W.E.S.O.M.E. club — which stands for Alcohol Won’t Ever Spoil Our Memorable Events — honored those who were injured or killed by drunken drivers in 2004, by planting tulip bulbs in front of the school. The Tulips One Voice event was sponsored by the Jefferson County FOCUS Coalition and Shepherdstown Middle School.

The club planted 21 red tulip bulbs for those injured by drunken drivers and three white tulips for those killed by drunken drivers.

The A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Club, which meets every Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the middle school, is a community service and educational organization that teaches students what the correct choices are and the consequences of making the wrong decisions. According to club sponsor and mentor Tracey Wygal, who teaches choir and music at the school, the Tulips One Voice event was started last year, and is intended to point out the most tragic consequences of alcohol abuse.

Wygal said there are 20 to 25 students in the club, with a mix of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders represented.

The club also recently hosted Red Ribbon week as part of national Drug Free Week. Wygal said that A.W.E.S.O.M.E. is involved in other community activities, such as picking up trash along area roadways.

The club was also involved in the school’s Spirit Week, which included such activities as “twin day” and “sock it to drugs day,” during which the students wore “crazy socks,” according to Wygal.
