PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

FOCUS sponsors a variety of safe and drug-free activities in the community, ranging from community programs and events to teen dances to school clubs. The goal is to provide positive alternative activities for youth during traditional times for high-risk behavior as well as opportunities for leadership development and community service.

SCHOOL CLUBS AND SERVICES

 

Positive Choices

FOCUS staff provide classes and one-one-one behavioral support in school to middle school and high school students referred by school administrators and staff.

 

BABES

BABES is a drug prevention puppet program offered to students in the elementary schools in the area. Students from the AWESOME Club are trained to present the program. BABES presenters from Shepherdstown Middle School have facilitated the program to students at Shepherdstown Elementary.

 

All Stars

All Stars is a character-based approach to preventing high-risk behaviors in teens. FOCUS offers the program as an after-school program in local schools.

 

Red Ribbon Week

Each year FOCUS co-sponsors events (including a poster contest) with local schools to commemorate Red Ribbon Week.

 

Second Step

This research-based SECOND STEP program helps students learn the protective skills to make good choices and stay engaged in school despite the pitfalls of substance abuse, bullying, cyber bullying, and peer pressure.

 

Parenting Wisely

Parenting Wisely (PW) is a parenting skills education system. PW programs are designed to facilitate the learning of necessary skills for the healthy well-balanced raising of children from age 3 to 18. Proven to reduce problem behaviors and increase communication and family unity, PW offers well documented and tested programs that guarantee results. 

 

Too Good For Drugs

Too Good for Drugs provides the support and develops the skills students need to make good decisions when facing the increasing challenges of stress, peer pressure and temptation.

 

Providing Youth Opportunities For Success (PYOS)

Following an individual assessment, participants attend one-on-one sessions in anger management or substance abuse, group sessions in Second Step program, and complete 6 hours of community service

AWESOME Club

Running from 2001-2008, Alcohol Won't Ever Spoil Our Memorable Events (AWESOME) was an exciting alcohol prevention club located at the Shepherdstown Middle School, 9th Grade Complex, and Jefferson High School of Jefferson County Schools.

 

RAZE (Tear Down the Lies)

From 2001-2007, RAZE was a tobacco prevention club for teens located at the Shepherdstown Middle School and 9th Grade Complex. RAZE sponsored educational activities and promotional events and sought to Tear Down the Lies! of big tobacco in its attempts to get young people hooked.

 

Smart Moves

Smart Moves is a Boys and Girls Club of America drug prevention curriculum that FOCUS offered as a free 10 week after school program to elementary schools in the area from 1998-2006. High school students under the direction of the FOCUS Youth Services Coordinator taught the course and led participants in a variety of fun and educational activities.

 

When Youth Create

Founded in 2006 with a grant from the Attorney General of West Virginia, When Youth Create is a community arts program for the youth of Jefferson County, West Virginia. The mission of When Youth Create was to connect youth with the arts as a way to strengthen positive facets in their lives and foster personal growth and healthy communities. Stipends were available for local artists to offer their expertise to youth in the program. More info here.
